shelly’s priorities
What I will work for in Des Moines
As I listen at the doors and in community conversations, these priorities keep coming through: protect what works, fix what doesn’t, and deliver results you can see at home in Muscatine County.

Demand strong public schools & equitable parent choice
While the voucher program gives some parents more choices, it does it by pulling funding away from public schools, even though we all still pay taxes. To keep public schools funded for real excellence, something has to give, and too often that means higher property taxes. In the end, taxpayers pay more than they should for both public and private education.
Shelly supports a universal Iowa tax credit for families who choose private, parochial or public schools. That keeps public taxpayer dollars in public schools and helps prevent property taxes from going up. Education must be a priority.
Affordable, accessible health care is our right
Health care is a human right. For too long, profit‑driven insurance companies have added layers of red tape that delay or block care for Iowans. We can cut those barriers by investing in accessible public health solutions and reducing the role of the middleman. That means better reimbursements for rural hospitals, keeping local hospitals open, and strengthening our local economy. By fighting for women’s health care, reproductive rights, and the personal autonomy of every Iowan, Shelly honors her oath to the constitution and stands with all Iowans.
Get Veterans all the benefits they have earned.
Shelly believes in protecting the rights of all veterans. The state must support Veteran Service Officers in every county so that services and benefits are easy to access. VA clinics need to be fully staffed and funded so veterans get the care they are promised, with no gatekeeping or delays to timely, quality community care.
Iowa farmers deserve better opportunities.
Farmers should have real autonomy over their land and equipment. That means the right to manage their crops and land, create new revenue through solar and wind, and repair their own equipment. The state should also provide a cohesive, streamlined, debt‑free way to fund soil and water conservation and remediation.
Iowa deserves clean land, water and sustainable energy
The health of all Iowans starts with clean air, clean water, and safe food, which are basic human rights. When our environment is unhealthy, our communities pay the price in poorer health. Shelly supports moving toward a carbon‑negative future by researching and implementing sustainable environmental practices in local communities. By helping communities become more self‑sufficient and funding these efforts, we can make Iowa a healthier place to call home.
Defend Workers’ Rights for all Iowans
Workers’ right to unionize is a fundamental right for all Iowans. From teachers and nurses to farmers, factory workers, and VA staff, people deserve the freedom to join unions that protect jobs, fair wages, secure retirement, and collective bargaining.Hands off our IPERS.
